Simran's story

Simran, a Law student, shares their story about Bristol and completing the 'Next Step Bristol' outreach programme.

Why Bristol?

As the first generation in my family to go to university, completing the University’s ‘Next Step Bristol’ outreach programme during sixth form is how I knew I would choose Bristol as my firm choice university. The series of webinars from the programme bridged the gap between college and university and provided a space for me to ask any questions. I met one of my closest friends at Bristol now from Next Step Bristol, which really helped with settling in - especially during freshers’ week!

Settling into accommodation

I currently live in the buzzing student area of Redland and stayed in Durdham Hall in Stoke Bishop last year. I really enjoyed my time staying in university accommodation as it was a new level of independence for me – I learnt that whilst I still dread doing laundry, I am actually a really good cook!

Financial support

I receive the University of Bristol bursary, which you do not need to apply for and helps in supporting my day-to-day expenditure at university. University comes with a lot more expenses than I thought, so working part-time as a tutor and creating a weekly budget helps me stay on track. There are also bursaries and scholarships available just for people of colour so I recommend looking into these as well.
