Manisha's story

Manisha, a Medical student, shares their experience of the University of Bristol and building a community.

Choosing a university

I grew up in South London and initially the thought of coming to a university that wasn’t known for being that diverse was a little bit daunting. I wasn’t sure if I’d fit in and if I’d be able to make my own group of friends who understood my background. I decided to stick with Bristol though since the city looked amazing on the open day and I really liked the course structure.

Feeling at home

I’m now in my fourth year of being here and honestly, it feels like home. I’ve got some brilliant housemates and made some really great friends. It isn’t as diverse as London, I’m not sure if anywhere is. But I’ve still managed to make it a city that’s for me. I’ve got my favourite food spots to take my family when they visit, the best charity shops, and feel like I’ve got my own community. I’ve also always really enjoyed Bollywood dance so got involved with it as soon as I started university. That’s been a great way to make friends from a similar background to me and I’ve even been able to perform at events all over the University.

Advice to myself

My time here has been great so far, I feel like I’ve grown up and become more of myself. If I could talk to myself when I was applying, I’d say go for it. Don’t worry about if it’s the place for you, it will be.
