Student Programmes

As a student of the University of Bristol there are many ways to start or continue your tennis journey, whether it is in the form of attending free classes, joining our student club or developing your skills through coaching.

B:Active

B:Active is a programme of social fitness and sport sessions, exclusively for Bristol students. Our wide range of sessions are all completely free, suitable for all abilities. We have a range of tennis based on the timetable from Cardio Tennis, to Pickleball to Tennis Skills. Sessions run at Wills, Coombe Dingle and at the Indoor Sports Centre to make the sport as accessible as possible. All of the B: ctive tennis (and Pickleball) sessions are run by UOB students with coaching qualifications and experience supported by student Activators, it is a great way to start playing regularly or to supplement your weekly tennis programme. Find a session here!

UBTC

The University of Bristol Tennis Club (UBTC) is one of the largest University Tennis Clubs in the UK with 440+ members run by students, for students. They are a large, friendly society, filled with students whose time at University has been greatly enhanced by being involved in the club, playing tennis alongside creating lifelong friendships. There is something for everyone on court and the UBTC committee works hard to put on numerous social events throughout the season and focus on the wellbeing of their members.

The UBTC committee and coaching team provide opportunities for all abilities (from beginner to BUCS and everything in between). UBTC is powered by UOB student volunteers and supported by the UOB Tennis Team and you are welcome to get involved at any point in the academic year.

Performance Tennis

We are very proud of the offer for our performance tennis players at Bristol. We have a programme that provides an inspiring and supportive environment for all our team players to improve with a more bespoke individualised offer for our Maroon Scholars. Our Head Coach, Ali Blackett, works closely with our BUCS Captains and players throughout the year to make sure that they have everything they need on and off the court to reach their potential. If you are considering applying to the University of Bristol and have competed for your county, region or country please email ali.blackett@bristol.ac.uk who will be able to provide you with more information or the opportunity to book in a Zoom meeting to get to know our programme better.

Scholarships

We have a limited number of scholarships available for high-performance athletes including the Vice-Chancellor scholarship and the new University of Bristol Maroon scholarship. For more information please get in touch with our Performance Team.

Get Involved

We strive to support University of Bristol students who have an interest in developing through tennis. We provide support for students looking to complete LTA coaching qualifications and we also look for students who are interested in creating, running and developing competitions across the programme. We are able to provide funding, 1:1 support, work experience and mentors, paid work (for those who apply / are approved by the Director of Tennis) and opportunities with partner venues and the LTA throughout the season.

If you would like to find out more about upcoming opportunities (LTA Level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications, LTA Competition Organiser and LTA Basic Referee courses) please email our University Tennis Coordinator Ollie Bendall ollie.bendall@bristol.ac.uk.
