Legal and compliance

The Secretary's Office provides advice and guidance in relation to a number of legal and compliance issues, as below:

Request for Legal Advice (Property/Commercial)

If you are a member of staff at the University and need legal support on Property or Commercial matters concerning
University business, please complete a Request for Legal Advice (Office document, 21kB) and submit to
secretarys-office@bristol.ac.uk.

We are a small team who provide legal support to all colleagues across the University Group. We therefore prioritise work
requests according to University Strategic Priorities.

From receipt of your form, we aim to be in touch regarding next steps within 3 working days.  After that, we aim to
undertake your work within 2-3 weeks of having received all required information.

Time Sensitive Matters - please mark the e-mail as urgent and complete the form stating the reason why and the deadline.

Research Contracts - can be secured via the Research Contracts Team

Third Party Consultancy - we have an arrangement with a firm of solicitors to provide these agreements. Before making a
request for a third party consultancy agreement please:

  1. Confirm if Procurement need to be involved.
  2. Complete the HMRC Test.  The tests can be completed by the consultant. Once completed the HMRC Status Indicator and the Online Data Capture should be sent to finance-vat@bristol.ac.uk.  Finance will give you a reference number.
  3. Complete the questionnaire (Office document, 57kB) and send to secretarys-office@bristol.ac.uk with the heading Third Party Consultancy Agreement Request. We will ask the solicitors to liaise with you directly once we have instructed them.
