Alan Reynolds and Philipp Schlicht

6 September 2021

The school extends a warm welcome to the following new staff.

Daniel Berlyne - Heilbronn Research Fellow: Daniel has just finsihed his PhD at the City University of New York Graduate Center, supervised by Jason Behrstock. His research is in geometric group theory and low-dimensional topology.

Jean Lagace - Research Associate: Jean will be a member of the Analysis group in PAD. His postdoc is supported by the EPSRC grant EP/T030577/1 and he will be working with Asma Hassannezhad. Before joining our school, Jean had a three-year postdoc position at the University College London. He got his PhD from the University of Montreal in 2018.

Alan Reynolds - Is a Teaching Associate in Statistical Science and will be teaching 1st and 2nd year undergraduates probability and statistics. After obtaining a mathematics degree (and part III) from Cambridge, Alan switched to Computer Science, studying what was then the Diploma in Computer Science. He then moved to the University of East Anglia where he did a Computer Science PhD (in scheduling problems and metaheuristic optimisation algorithms) and was employed in a number of Research Associate and Teaching Associate roles. This was followed by Research Associate positions at Heriot-Watt University. Another change in direction in 2013 led to the MSc in Particles, Strings and Cosmology at Durham University, followed by a PhD in Mathematical Physics, entitled "Exploring Holographic Chaos and Complexity" and obtained in 2018. Alan then moved to Bristol doing some work remotely for Heriot-Watt University on a project on the application of multiobjective optimisation to quantum circuit design.

Philipp Schlicht - Research Associate in Pure: Philipp is a member of the Mathematical Logic Group. He’ll be working jointly with Philip Welch on the EPSRC project ‘Graphs on Generalised Baire Spaces’. From April to August Philipp taught as a substitute professor at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn.
