An interview with our Faculty Wellbeing Adviser Lauren Wardle

Press release issued: 24 February 2020

As part of University Mental Health Day on 5th March we are talking to the Wellbeing Advisers who support students in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. Today we put some questions to Amy Wardle, who started in the role a year ago.

What inspired you to apply for the role of Wellbeing Adviser here at Bristol?

I am passionate about helping students who are experiencing any kind of problem here at University. Sometimes this is just by listening, or by helping them to access the right services, as well as building on their own skills to manage the ups and downs of life.

Where did you work before and how is it relevant to your role here?

I previously worked as a Faculty Student Adviser in the Faculty of Health Sciences, working in a similar way with medical and dental students. I also have several years' experience working with both UG and PG students as a member of professional services, being the main contact for extenuating circumstances and suspensions of study.

What makes you most proud about your work in the team?

I am most proud of our work when we manage to find that one technique or resource which really resonates and helps a student with whatever they are dealing with. Also, I feel that we are helping students to talk about problems early on, which is good practice for life in general.

How is life as a Wellbeing Adviser for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law a year on?

Life as a Wellbeing Adviser in the Faculty is busy, yet very rewarding. In September 2019 we launched a new single point of access for students, called Wellbeing Access, which allows students to call one number or complete an online form for any wellbeing needs. We have also been running a selection of workshops each term on topics such as perfectionism, self-esteem, exam stress and resilience. Our service continues to grow in demand, and we have had very positive feedback from students and staff. We are always open to further feedback from students on what they would like to see from the service, so would encourage students to get in touch with any ideas!
