Hosted events, attended external events and research trips

I. Country workshops: Canada

  1. Between 4 and 12 June 2017, the HRLIP Americas Team conducted 11 individual formal interviews (in the cities of Montreal and Ottawa) with lawyers that have litigated some of the cases that the HRLIP is looking into; civil society working on implementation of concluding observations, with potential involvement in litigation; a senior staff member of one independent provincial human rights institution; one member of Parliament; and one national representative of a United Nations agency.
  2. On 7 June 2017, from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the HRLIP Americas Team held a workshop/discussion group titled “Institutional responses to immigration in Canada” at the Law School of the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM). There were 7 key participants, including the in-country liaison consultant and 6 lawyers that have litigated the cases that the HRLIP is looking into.   3. On 12 June 2017, from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the HRLIP Americas Team held a workshop/discussion group titled “Strengthening Canada’s institutional coordination in the implementation of views and recommendations issued by regional and international human rights bodies” at the Canadian Council for International Cooperation, in Ottawa, Ontario. There were 10 participants, including 8 people from 7 civil society organizations, and 2 people from 2 State institutions. The discussion was carried out under the Chatham House Rule. II. Country workshops: Colombia

  1. Between 24 July and 2 August 2017, and on 11 August 2017, the HRLIP Americas Team travelled to the city of Bogotá and conducted 11 individual formal interviews and 6 collective formal interviews (all in Spanish), with a total of 28 people from the most relevant State institutions and civil society organizations involved in litigation, follow-up, and other related aspects of implementation of decisions issued by international human rights bodies.
  2. On 31 July 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. the HRLIP Americas Team held a workshop/discussion (in Spanish) group titled “Strengthening Colombia’s institutional mechanisms and processes for the implementation of recommendations and orders issued by regional and international human rights bodies” at the office of  Dejusticia. There were 20 participants, including the in-country liaison consultant, 1 independent lawyer, 4 people from 3 civil society organizations, 4 independent human rights experts, and 10 people from 5 State institutions.   3. On 1 August 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. the HRLIP Americas Team held a workshop/discussion group (in Spanish) titled “Implementation of the duty to provide medical and psychological attention to victims of human rights violations in Colombia” at the office of Dejusticia. There were 12 participants, including the in-country liaison consultant, 3 people from 3 civil society organizations, 1 independent human rights expert, and 7 people from 4 State institutions. III. Country workshops: Guatemala

  1. Between 2 and 10 August 2017, the HRLIP Americas Team travelled to Guatemala City and conducted 11 individual formal interviews and 1 collective formal interview (all in Spanish), with a total of 18 people from the most relevant State institutions and civil society organizations involved in litigation, follow-up, and other related aspects of implementation of decisions issued by international human rights bodies.
  2. On 9 August 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the HRLIP Americas Team held a workshop/discussion group (in Spanish) titled “Strengthening Guatemala’s institutional mechanisms and processes for the implementation of recommendations and orders issued by regional and international human rights bodies”. There were 15 participants, including the in-country liaison consultant, 8 people from 7 civil society organizations, and 6 people from 4 State institutions.   3. On 9 August 2017, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. the HRLIP Americas Team held a workshop/discussion group (in Spanish) titled “Implementation of Guatemala’s duty to investigate, prosecute and punish those responsible for human rights violations”. There were 20 participants, including the in-country liaison consultant, 8 people from 6 civil society organizations, and 11 people from 5 State institutions.
