According to University of Bristol historian Dr James Watts, protest is 'woven into the city's history'. Bristol is an engaged and active city, home to strong grassroots movements – from the Bristol Bus Boycott of 1963, to the Black Lives Matter movement and the toppling of the Colston statue in 2020. 

But activism isn't only about protest. Bristol's commitment to individuality and community takes many forms. Art installations, public music festivals and co-operative businesses all illustrate Bristol's independent spirit. We also have the longest street of independent shops in Europe.

Bristol's skyline is beautiful year-round, but especially during Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. More than 100 hot air balloons take to the skies every August, with more creativite editions every year. Recent fan favourite balloons include Sonic the Hedgehog and the Giant Babybel cheese.
