Crystal Theatre of the Saint

Overview

The Crystal Theatre of the Saint was founded in Bristol in 1971 by Paul B. Davies and Bradley Winterton with Mortimer Ribbons, Liz Acford and John Schofield. It was run as a co-operative of its members, later including Dave Borthwick, Dixon Howe, Pete Sykes and Andy Leighton, until it disbanded in 1981. A stated aim of Crystal Theatre was to 'generate and explore the theatrical experience', and it was described as distinguishing itself from other companies 'through its commitment to experimentation, and a fresh, multimedia approach to drama'. As well as Bristol, the company performed at the Oval House, Hoxton Hall and the ICA in London; and the Melkweg, Exit Club and De Lantaren in Rotterdam, where they were based during 1974/5. They often performed at festivals, including the Ashton Court festival in Bristol, as well as collaborating with other artists, including Forkbeard Fantasy. Their collaborations with musicians, who played live as part of productions, evolved into Bristol punk band Shoes For Industry. Detailed information about the history of the company, together with an interview with founding member Paul B. Davies, can be found on the Unfinished Histories website
