Position title: Student Internship: Climate Action Officer

The University has ambitious Net-Zero targets, requiring action and change across every School and Division of the organisation. The Sustainability Team's Climate Action Planning tool supports departments to create bespoke plans based on their unique opportunities to make a positive impact on climate change. The objective is to support every School and Division to develop a CAP, implement actions and continually improve their climate and carbon action. 

Objective of the internship 

The Sustainability Team is looking for a student intern, with a passion for sustainability and some analysis experience, to coordinate the departmental Climate Action Plans (CAPs) at the University of Bristol. The intern will also assist the departments in quantifying their carbon footprint

The post will work with the Sustainability Marketing and Communications Project Officer and relevant members of the Sustainability Team to support CAP development, progress and reporting. They will liaise with key members of academic Schools and Professional Services and support them in the climate action journey. 

Tasks and responsibilities include 

  • Liaising with Technical Managers, School Managers, Principle Investigators (PIs), students, Heads of School or Division, and administration staff to develop and progress CAPs. 

  • Undertaking regular analysis and reporting on CAPs using the CAP software platform. 

  • Conducting Faculty, School and Departmental-level carbon analysis for scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. 

  • Meeting regularly with Schools and Divisions to update them on progress and bring in relevant Sustainability team specialists for advice. 

  • Analysing institutional progress through gap analysis and engaging Schools and Divisions who are yet to write their CAP. 

  • Raising the profile of Climate Action Plans through communications, events and meetings.  

  • Responsibility for CAP communication content such as newsletters, blogs and social media content.  

  • Acting as the point of contact for Climate Action Plans. 

  • Assisting Schools and Division with actions associated with the progression of their CAPs 

  • Report to the Sustainable Science Manager on projects and events. 

  • Oversee ad-hoc tasks and opportunities which may arise throughout the internship in relation to climate action. 

The person 

Essential criteria 

  • Ability to work independently and in a team.  

  • Data analysis experience. 

  • Passion for sustainability, climate action and environmental stewardship. 

  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.  

  • Strong communication skills. 

  • Able to work remotely from home and in the office in line with the University’s blended working policy. 

  • Be able to work throughout the summer break. The candidate will work until August 2025 as the post is offered on a fixed-term basis for one year. Please state this in your application.  

Desirable criteria 

  • 2nd, 3rd year or MSc students preferable. 

  • Familiarity with the work of Sustainability and of the University. 

  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities. 

  • Experience in communications or managing a non-personal social media account and newsletter production. 

  • Experience in a leadership role.

Proposed start date: Week commencing 16 September 2024

Hours of work: The position is for 14 hours per week. The work pattern is flexible within each week and the hours can be split over more than three days to fit in with your studies. This can be discussed at interview. 

Post duration: The post is for a fixed term period of one year.  

Position supervisor: Sustainability Marketing and communications Projects Officer 

Location, including any relevant travel information: The candidate will be working both remotely and in the office, which is based at 1-9 Old Park Hill. 

Salary: £18,018 per FTE (this role is 0.4 FTE or 14 hours per week)
