Action challenge

What and why?

Volunteer or join an action group.

By leveraging our collective power, we can challenge status quo and create opportunities for change to take root. By recognising that we are all a part of various communities and being active citizens of those groups, we can make real change happen.

Start conversations.

Use your voice to raise awareness of the changes you want to see in the world. We each have a platform, whether that’s social media or our circle of influence with peers and co-workers. Changing mindsets and shifting perceptions usually happens slowly, but by planting the seeds in small interactions with friends, family, neighbours and strangers, we can grow the movement.

Recycle.

Each year the UK produces in the region of 222million tonnes of waste – a challenge which is ever growing.1 When items and packaging are discarded they usually end up in landfill, releasing co2 into the atmosphere, with most materials taking hundreds of years to break down. By separating our rubbish into categories including such as glass, plastics, metals, paper and food waste, we can divert waste from landfill and enable it to be made into new resources.

Get growing.

Through photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide and convert it to energy. At the same time, they can filter pollutants from the air release and oxygen into the atmosphere. Plants are also excellent recyclers, taking nutrients from the soil during their lifetime, then fertilizing the ground when they decompose. Plants impact everything, from air quality to the weather, and supply other living things with the resources they need to thrive. When we take care of plants, we’re making a difference to the health of our entire ecosystem.2

Top tips

  • Start today – have a conversation about this campaign with a friend or family member. Tell them about how you plan to challenge yourself.
  • Consider your values, passions and skills and how you could share your time with a society, political organisation, charity or action group. Have a look on Bristol SU’s website, Facebook or Google to find out more and join an organisation. Staff can also look to Yammer to discover networks of likeminded people.
  • If you don’t already recycle, read up on your local authority’s recycling guidelines as these tend to differ slightly by region.
  • If you’re new to growing, a great place to start is by repotting herbs bought in the supermarket with a little bit of compost in a recycled container with drainage - a grapes punnet is perfect.
