Accessibility statement for eVision

This accessibility statement applies to https://evision.apps.bristol.ac.uk.

eVision is the University of Bristol’s Student Information Management system. This web application is managed by the Student Systems Team within the University of Bristol.

We want every user of eVision to be able to use this system. For example, this means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the application using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the application using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the application using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
  • understand the text content in the web application

How accessible this system is

A partial audit of eVision was undertaken in 2022 to check its compliance with WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards. We know some parts of the system are not fully accessible:

  • Most pages do not allow a keyboard access to full functionality
  • Most pages require horizontal scrolling
  • Screen-readers do not work fully on some pages
  • Keyboard navigation is not in a logical left-right manner on some pages
  • Some links do not contain text that describe the link purpose
  • Some pages contain colours to convey information
  • The minimum contrast ratio between text and images text is not compliant on some pages

A complete audit of our SSRS reports was completed. There are several accessibility issues, some of which are not resolvable at the moment due to system limitations:

  • Titles and subheadings are not always used
  • Mandatory fields are not always clear
  • Not all reports are exportable to Excel
  • Colour contrast is not always consistent
  • Colour and icons are sometimes the only method to convey information
  • Scrolling in two dimensions to navigate our reports is common*
  • It is not possible to navigate any of our reports or parameter selectors solely with a keyboard*
  • Screen readers cannot read our reports consistently*

 * Not currently resolvable.

Feedback, reporting problems and contact information

Please contact the Student Systems Team by emailing ssio-systems@bristol.ac.uk if you wish to provide feedback about the accessibility of eVision. Feedback may include:

  • reporting issues experienced when trying to access information using the application
  • reporting issues experienced when trying to use the application
  • reporting accessibility issues not listed in this statement
  • commenting on the accessibility considerations made

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the 'accessibility regulations'). If you are unhappy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Compliance status

This web application is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 Level AA standard. Non-compliant content will be listed here as it is discovered during future audits.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Following a six-week accessibility project, and subsequent work, the University has:

  • identified priority areas of eVision
  • commenced the audit of high priority areas of eVision
  • commenced fixes on the errors we have found in the areas audited so far
  • developed an auditing protocol
  • developed a testing protocol so that all new development and updates are tested against the WCAG 2.1 level AA standard for accessibility
  • developed design standards to ensure that future development meets accessibility standards
  • provided accessible development and design training for members of staff who are involved in the update and maintenance of eVision, including systems developers, test analysts, product owners, and other project staff
  • made accessibility improvements a core part of all development work
  • improved the accessibility of new reports by making them downloadable to Excel

Future projects which include user-facing developments have been increased by two weeks to allow for accessibility issues in the corresponding area of eVision to be audited and fixed during that project.

This Accessibility Statement will be updated as the audit and fixes continue.
