Leona McCalla, MSc Social Work Research

The MSc in Social Work Research provided me with the opportunity to develop my knowledge and skills in research. I have worked as a practicing Social Worker for a number of years and I have always had an interest evidence based practice. In the future, my aim is to change my career direction to be more involved in developing research in social work and social care.

There are three core mandatory units aimed at developing your knowledge of the philosophical approaches underpinning research, as well as the foundations of qualitative and quantitative research. In addition, you can choose optional units; these usually relate to your own area of practice or interest.

The quality of the teaching is fantastic. Lectures are delivered by experts in their field and employ a wide range of teaching methods including traditional teacher-led lectures, group work and lab-based sessions - there is something for everyone.

I completed the course on a part-time variable basis over a period of three years. This worked well for me, allowing me the flexibility to complete my studies whilst working full time and managing the demands of family life.
