Bristol Research Forum on Ageing presents the latest research on housing for older people, with a focus on connection and independence.

Presentations will be followed by a Q&A.

Speakers

1) Dr Paul Willis, School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol

Presentation title: Inclusive neighbourhoods for older people: promoting social inclusion in housing with care for older people. Findings from the DICE study.

Paul Willis is an Associate Professor in Social Work and Social Gerontology in the School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol. He is also Head of the Centre for Research in Health and Social Care in the School and a Senior Fellow of the NIHR School for Social Care Research. Paul’s research areas include: inclusive housing provision for older people; loneliness, ageing and masculinities; sexuality, care and ageing; trans ageing and gender identity; and inclusive care provision for diverse groups of older people. Paul teaches on the MSc Social Work programme at Bristol.

The DICE study is a three-year study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (2019-2021) in collaboration with the International Longevity Centre-UK (ILC-UK) and Housing LIN. The central aim is to examine the social inclusion of older people from socially diverse backgrounds in housing with care and support (HCS) schemes across England and Wales. In this presentation Paul and the DICE team will present some headline findings from the study.

2) Daniel Hibbs-Woodings, Tonic Housing

Presentation title: The housing needs of older LGBTQ+ people: the work of Tonic Housing

Daniel Hibbs-Woodings is an experienced housing professional who has worked in for seven years in the areas of social housing, ED&I and LGBTQ+ issues particularly in a housing context. Daniel now works as the Community and Customer Relationship Manager for Tonic Housing, a non-profit organisation which has recently opened the UK's first LGBTQ+ affirming retirement community. Daniel will be attending the event to talk about the housing needs of older LGBTQ+ people with particular relation to Bankhouse as a Housing with Care scheme and Tonic's community and resident-led approach to everything they do.
