Gendered Experiences of Justice and Domestic Abuse

24 May 2021, 1.00 PM - 24 May 2021, 2.00 PM

Lizzie McCarthy, Women's Aid

Online event

You are invited to an online seminar with Lizzie McCarthy from Women's Aid who will talk about gendered experiences of justice and domestic abuse, hosted by the Centre for Gender and Violence Research, School for Policy Studies.

As part of a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship between Women’s Aid and the University of Bristol, Lizzie has been working with the Centre for Gender and Violence Research to analyse 36 transcripts of in-depth interviews with domestic abuse survivors. The analysis has focussed on identifying ‘gendering discourses’, namely those that strengthen and perpetuate inequality between men and women, gendered norms and stereotypes.

Lizzie will present some findings from the project looking at the language employed to describe mental health, sexuality and household roles, and how ‘gendering discourses’ on these topics have the impact of excusing perpetrators’ abusive actions and minimising or silencing survivors’ voices.

This is an online event and joining details will be sent to registered attendees prior to the event.

This is a free talk and all are welcome, but tickets must be booked to attend.
