School of Arts excellence in REF 2021 result

We’re genuinely delighted by the outstanding performance of the School of Arts in the results of the Research Excellence Framework 2021. Our collective success is a result of the drive, creativity and effort that colleagues across the School have put into their research endeavours over the last seven years, and we’re immensely pleased and proud. 

The School’s submission to REF2021 was in three Units of Assessment: Anthropology and Development Studies (UoA22); Philosophy (UoA30); and Music, Drama, Dance, Performing Arts, Film & Screen Studies (UoA33).  

We are very proud that across the School, 100% of our research environment was judged to be world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). Top-line results from each UoA are: 

Music, Film & TV, Theatre: 

  • 86% of outputs and 67% of impact judged world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). 
  • Overall, 83% of the submission was judged world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). 
  • In the Times Higher Education rankings, MFT was placed 18/84. 

Philosophy 

  • 81% of outputs, and 83% impact, judged world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). 
  • Overall, 84% of the submission was judged world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). 
  • In the THE rankings, Philosophy was placed 11/31. 

Anthropology & Archaeology: 

  • 86% of outputs, and 100% of impact, judged world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). 
  • Overall, 91% of the submission was judged world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). 
  • In the THE rankings, Anthropology was placed 6/26.
