Quantalk – A Quantum Speaking-Competition for A-Level Students

Quantalk finalists

18 July 2024

On Friday the 5th of July, Cohort X of the Quantum Engineering CDT hosted the Quantalk final in the Tyndall Lecture Theatre – where 8 year 12 students from various schools around Bristol competed to give the best TED-talk style presentation. The final was preceded by several weeks of training, where Cohort X visited the schools to teach participants presentation and research skills, as well as some quantum mechanics. Those with the best presentations from each school went on to compete in the final.

Each presentation was 5 minutes-long and concepts were explained such that fellow A-level students could understand – no easy feat when the topic is quantum mechanics! To make matters worse, presentations were followed by some ruthless questions from the judges. In the end the winner was Alana from St. Brendan’s Sixth Form College, who gave an excellent talk on quantum entanglement, followed by Iris and Kiyan as runners-up. Hopefully Quantum Engineering CDT students will continue to run Quantalk sessions in future years!
