Responsible research and innovation
Our Engagement work is underpinned by an ethos of Responsible Research and Innovation. We encourage researchers to reflect on the current and future impacts of their work, their motivation and purposes, and to include diverse voices at different stages of their work by engaging responsibly with stakeholders and members of the public.
What is Responsible Research and Innovation?
Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) or Responsible Innovation (RI) is a process which seeks to align science and technology research and innovation with the needs and values of society.
This emphasis of RRI on responsible stakeholder engagement and societal impact aligns with the common values and purposes of Public Engagement. As such, we have developed and collaborated on RRI projects covering topics including zero-carbon buildings, gender roles in engineering, the climate and ecological crises, and the philosophy of science.
Gaining skills and experience from our projects
Through our own reflective practice, we aim to learn from our RRI projects, and to build this back into the support and training we deliver to researchers at Bristol. We have also produced a number of toolkits and practical outputs which are open source and free to download.
