Is body dissatisfaction related to an attentional bias towards low weight bodies in non-clinical samples of women? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Press release issued: 4 January 2023

A new paper by researchers including members of TARG has been published, entitled 'Is body dissatisfaction related to an attentional bias towards low weight bodies in non-clinical samples of women? A systematic review and meta-analysis'.

A key symptom of eating disorders is feeling dissatisfied with one’s body size and shape. We combined the results of 34 studies to find out if women who are dissatisfied with their own body direct more attention to low weight body sizes. Eye-tracking studies provided evidence showing that women who were dissatisfied with their body spent more time looking at low weight women. Other measures of attentional bias did not provide compelling evidence for this relationship. These findings can inform the way we treat eating disorder symptoms and  measure attentional bias.
