Both teams have a shared interest in the relationship between anxiety and performance, and are keen to identify novel ways to support musicians and optimise their performance during auditions or shows.
TARG Researchers use the 7.5% carbon dioxide inhalation (pictured), a safe and reliable method to induce temporary feelings of acute anxiety. Traditionally, this method has been used in laboratory experiments to investigate the effect of anxiety on various abilities and behaviours, but there is potential to use it as a training adjunct in real-world settings with performers.
Professor Williamon and Dr Waddell experienced the inhalation themselves and the teams had some fascinating discussions about its potential use in this professional setting. The TARG team thank our hosts for the opportunity to visit RCM – it was a hugely interesting and fun day!
