1 July 2024

From 3-5 July, we will be welcoming over 400 delegates from the UK and internationally to Bristol for this year’s Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC) Annual Scientific Meeting. SAPC is the leading organisation championing academic primary care in the UK.

The theme of the conference is ‘Sustainable primary care: healthy systems, healthy people’, which is reflected in the contributions to both the academic and social programmes, and the arts events being held alongside.

There is a packed programme with distinguished plenary speakers (see Highlights below), and over 290 presentations (oral and poster) and workshops showcasing the latest primary care research in the UK.

The conference is a fantastic opportunity to connect with peers, mentors, and potential collaborators, and to build relationships to drive future research and educational initiatives. Opportunities for networking are on offer throughout the conference.

The Welcome address will be given by Professor Chrissie Thirlwell, Head of Bristol Medical School.

Professor Katrina Turner, Head of the Centre for Academic Primary Care, University of Bristol, said: “General practice provides over 300 million patient consultations each year. It is under extraordinary workforce and funding pressures, while also grappling with widening inequalities. All of these are challenges that make sustainability a critical issue for future primary care research, policy and practice. As one of the leading centres for primary care research in the UK, and a member of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research, we are delighted to be hosting this year’s SAPC conference.”

Dr Alyson Huntley and Dr Rachel Johnson, co-chairs of the conference organising committee said: “We are delighted to welcome our speakers and delegates to Bristol for this key event in the primary care research calendar. As we increasingly see changes in world climate and nature, there is an urgent need for the research community to focus on sustainability. We have put a good deal of thought into moderating and reporting the impact of the conference on the environment, using it as a case study for future conferences.”

Professor Rupert Payne, SAPC co-chair, said: “SAPC is delighted that the 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting is being hosted by Bristol this year. The conference theme of sustainable primary care is incredibly important for individuals and the wider population alike, and aligns closely with SAPC's strategic priorities. Bristol is a dynamic and exciting city, and the Centre for Academic Primary Care is an internationally renowned centre for primary care research. We are confident the combination of these will lead to an outstanding event.”
