Bristol Poverty Institute Interdisciplinary Seminar Series Presents

Climate Change and Poverty

Wednesday 27 October, 11:30-13:00 (webinar)

The Bristol Poverty Institute (BPI) are pleased to announce an upcoming online interdisciplinary webinar on the topic of Climate Change and Poverty. This event takes place the week before COP26 as we are keen to ensure that poverty dimensions of climate change are part of the conversation. Climate change is most likely to disproportionally impact poorer communities, and some attempts to mitigate climate change and move towards a more environmentally sustainable future can unintentionally increase inequalities and widen the gap. Efforts to tackle climate change are therefore vital, but it is essential that they consider both social and environmental aspects and leave no one behind.

The webinar will commence with short presentations from each of our fantastic speakers on issues related to the theme of climate change and how this can intersect with poverty issues from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Our confirmed speakers so far are:

  • Guy Howard (Director of Cabot Institute for the Environment; Global Research Chair Environmental and Infrastructure Resilience, Faculty of Engineering)
  • Mary Zhang (Senior Research Associate, Policy Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences and Law)
  • Ed Atkins (Lecturer, Geographical Sciences, Faculty of Science)
  • Alix Dietzel (Lecturer, Sociology, Politics and International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences and Law)

This event is open to all University of Bristol academics at all career stages (including PhD researchers) as well as selected external attendees. We may also be able to accommodate limited numbers of Professional Services colleagues and/or Masters students – please get in touch for more details.

Places are limited, so please register early to avoid disappointment. To register your interest please contact bristol-poverty-institute@bristol.ac.uk. Registered attendees will be provided with information on how to join the online seminar. Please note that this webinar will be recorded, and we plan to share the recording online to make it accessible to those who were unable to attend. By registering for this webinar you give consent to be recorded and for the recording to be shared.
