MWC Barcelona is regarded as one of largest and most prestigious events for the telecoms sector, with senior executives from top global companies, international governments, and trailblazing tech developers converging under one roof.
Professor Dimitra Simeonidou, Director of the Smart Internet Lab, will be one of the speakers at the event, discussing the team’s research and asking whether 5G has done enough to justify 6G.
University of Bristol will be central to a delegation from UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN) and REASON. UKTIN is the innovation network for the UK telecoms sector which brings together industry, government stakeholders and academia to spur R&D investment and commercialisation.
Formed in 2022, UKTIN founding partners include the University of Bristol, Catapult Digital, Cambridge Wireless and West Midlands 5G. The consortium is supported by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
REASON is a University of Bristol-led project funded by the UK Government to develop and industrialise technologies and solutions for future 6G mobile networks.
At MWC Barcelona the REASON team will be demonstrating the new Multi-Access Technology Real-Time Intelligent Controller (mATRIC) technology. mATRIC is a cutting-edge software which serves as a pioneering example of emerging 6G network capabilities.
Professor Simeonidou said: “I am delighted with our presence at this year’s Mobile World Congress, it is the sector’s most prestigious event and offers a great opportunity to showcase the pioneering research the University of Bristol and its partners working towards 6G are doing, as well as our work in driving innovation in the telecoms sector."
At the conference, the UKTIN team will be demonstrating a prototype AI-powered chat-based tool created by University of Bristol academics and designed specifically for the telecommunications sector.
Known as the Discovery Tool, it will allow users to search for information about academic research related to telecoms, funding opportunities, spin-out companies, start-ups and much more.
The tool will employ a Large Language Model in order to accurately capture the user’s search requirements and provide precise and relevant results. It is also capable of producing results and immediately converting the data into a table, graphs, or even a heat map.
The team will also be sharing news about Smart Internet Lab Innovations launching in 2024 a new programme to partner with industry, investors and engineers on technical and commercial challenges in the telecoms sector.
