20,000 expected at University of Bristol open day

Bristol businesses should expect a busier day than usual on Saturday as 20,000 people visit for the University of Bristol’s final open day of the year.

The prospective students, many visiting Bristol for the first time, will get a taste of the courses, student life and pastoral support on offer at the University.

Running from 9.30am to 4pm, the day features scores of subject talks, building tours, demonstrations and workshops.

The open day’s ‘student life sessions’ give a window into the University’s accommodation, Careers Service, wellbeing support services, scholarships and 350 sports groups and societies.

They also showcase the University’s additional support for disabled, BAME and LGBTQ+ students.

Pop-up street food stalls will serve everything from delicious burgers to Middle Eastern influenced vegan dishes.

Local residents and businesses should expect a busier day in Bristol, particularly around the heart of the Clifton Campus: Tyndall Avenue, Woodland Road, Queens Road and the Triangle.

Tansy Jessop, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University, said: “Welcoming excited prospective students and their loved ones to the University is one of the highlights of the year for us.

“Over two days in June this year we showed around 30,000 what a fantastic place Bristol is, both to study and live, and we can’t wait to do it again on Saturday.

“Once again, we hope the day will showcase Bristol to a new audience, while also giving a bumper day to local businesses.”

Tyndall Avenue, Woodland Road and Priory Road will be closed to general traffic on the open days to allow a shuttle bus services to operate. There will be a one-way system in place from St Michael’s Hill, along Tyndall Avenue, turning right onto Woodland Road and exiting at Tyndall’s Park Road.
The First Bus service 72 will divert via Queens Avenue, Elmdale Road and Tyndall’s Park Road in both directions. Buses will stop at the bus stops on diversion routes. The U2 service will operate as usual.
