Nearly 900 people were nominated for this year’s Bristol Teaching Awards (BTAs), which highlights outstanding contributions to teaching and supporting students.
At yesterday's [June 8] Bristol Teaching Celebration – the culmination of the BTAs – Tansy Jessop, the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education, said the celebration was a tribute to the fantastic teaching and commitment of staff to students, along with the University's thriving educational culture.
The annual BTAs have been running since 2013 and provide a chance for students and staff to highlight the work of those who have shone during the past 12 months.
Hundreds are nominated each year, with winners receiving a coveted golden apple trophy and a dinner in recognition of their efforts.
This year, Andy Radford, Professor of Behavioural Ecology in the School of Biological Sciences, won both the Outstanding Research Supervision Award and the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Education.
The Vice-Chancellor's Award is hand-picked by Professor Hugh Brady, in recognition of the recipient's exceptional contribution to education and enhancement of the student experience.
Nominees said Prof Radford had created a “warm, open, friendly, motivating, stimulating, fun and encouraging environment in his research group” and helped students to “realise that you can do things you didn’t realise you were capable of”.
Talking after yesterday’s Bristol Teaching Celebration, Prof Radford said: “It’s amazing – and humbling – to win these two awards.
“I’m really passionate about working with and helping early career researchers. They’re smart, fun, interesting and great communicators, and seeing them develop is inspiring. I'm incredibly lucky to work with such amazing people; it is easily a highlight of my job.
“And I would have said that even if I didn’t win!”
The 12 award category shortlists were decided by panels of students and staff. A winner was then picked from each shortlist by Prof Jessop.

Prof Jessop said: “At Bristol we have some of the most inspiring, enthusiastic and dedicated teachers and support staff in the sector.
“This celebration is all about thanking them for their efforts and the difference they make to our students. I was absolutely thrilled that nearly 900 staff members were nominated.
“Huge congratulations to all our incredible staff. Today reminds us of what ‘world-beating teaching’ looks like - it is fun, challenging and focused on bringing out the best in our students."
