A student has won £10,000 for his outstanding performance on a self-development programme.

Casmir Obasi, an Economics and Finance third year, beat 1,000 students from across the UK for one of the four cash-winning spots on Santander’s Universities Student Online Self-Development Programme.

Students were tasked with developing themselves using online tools – including inspirational videos from some well-known celebrities.

“I applied for the programme as I thought it would be a good opportunity to develop my soft skills and boost employability,” the 21-year-old said.

“The Career Service offers so many opportunities, such as Bristol PLUS Award and Bristol Mentors, which have really helped me, so I knew this would be a good opportunity.

“We were guided along the process well and we were given lessons and quizzes on important topics relevant to employability and a growth mindset.

“Then we had access to videos from a range of people like Frank Lampard, Mo Farah and others not involved in sport.”

Casmir hopes to bag a graduate job in finance after leaving the University of Bristol – although he will be sad to say goodbye.

He said: “I have enjoyed my course at Bristol, it has been very interactive and stimulating.”

Nineteen University of Bristol students took part in the programme, which was run in partnership with Sporting Edge, a consultancy that improves personal performance using insights and psychology.

Matt Hutnell, Director of Santander Universities UK, congratulated Casmir, along with all the people who took part in the programme.

He said: “I hope you’ve enjoyed the insights provided through the programme and that you look forward to implementing your learnings throughout your future studies.”

Jeremy Snape, Founder of Sporting Edge, added: “Sporting Edge were delighted to partner with Santander Universities on this programme.

“We have been thrilled to read so much positive feedback and hear how the content has inspired and been a useful support during these challenging times.

“Our central goal as a business is to help people manage their pressures and set future goals so it has been amazing to hear so many students bring that to life so powerfully in their feedback.”
