The University of Bristol has been ranked 8th in the UK and at 64th in the world, maintaining its climb of 10 places from last year, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) published today.

ARWU by ShanghaiRanking is considered one of the leading international league tables. Each year, it assesses more than 1,800 universities, using six measures and publishes data on the best 1,000.

Universities are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Field MEdals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

Bristol is ranked in the top 100 for four of the six indicators in the rankings, with the number of papers published in ‘Nature & Science’ coming in at 47out of 1000.

The recent Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020 confirmed that 20 subjects are world-class. It named 20 subjects at Bristol in the world's top 100, with five of these featuring in the top 50.
