Belinda Burke, 1954-2018

Belinda Burke

10 May 2018

Belinda Margaret Catherine Burke passed away in February. This remembrance contains contributions from her daughter Marie and from Simon Osborne, Technical Manager in the School of Chemistry.

Born in Omagh, County Tyrone, N Ireland to Bobby and Bridget Burke, Belinda was one of seven children. She was proud of her Irish heritage and of Omagh Town which she always considered her home.

She was a loyal and dependable mother to Marie, Julie and Robert and grandmother to their six children and her wish was for them all to be happy, healthy and cheeky just as she had been.

Belinda was fiercely independent and would let no obstacle stand in her way, having learned to drive and swim in her fifties.

She worked full-time for most of her life, the last 23 years for the University of Bristol. Starting as a member of the cleaning staff she progressed to become a technician in the School of Chemistry teaching laboratories, a job which she loved.

Belinda had a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in late 2017 and passed away on 24 February 2018.

Belinda was very well liked and respected by all her colleagues. She will be greatly missed and remembered with huge fondness. Her daughter Marie recalls that she had ‘the most wicked and spontaneously intellectual sense of humour’, for which her children will always remember her.

Anyone who would like to make a donation in Belinda’s memory can do so with St Peter’s Hospice.
