The funding came specifically from the Bristol Institute for Research in the Humanities and Arts (BIRTHA).

'Kemtiyu-Cheikh Anta' was awarded first prize for best documentary at Fespaco, Africa's oldest and most prestigious film festival.

In February, Dr Ruth Bush from the University’s Department of French, and Dr Jacqueline Maingard from the Department of Film and Television, hosted the film’s director and editor, William Ousmane Mbaye and Laurence Attali, for its UK premiere.

The film is a documentary about the path-breaking Senegalese historian and polymath, Cheikh Anta Diop, whose work fought to restore historical awareness and dignity to Africa.

Screenings were held at Birkbeck, University of London and at the Watershed Cinema in Bristol (in partnership with Afrika Eye Film Festival), followed by a Q&A with the director and producer.

These screenings are part of the ongoing programme of events presented by members of the Black Arts and Humanities research cluster at the University of Bristol.
