Press release issued: 7 December 2015
InterDigital, Inc., a mobile technology research and development company, has announced that InterDigital Europe has joined the Bristol Is Open programmable city project. Bristol Is Open is a joint venture between the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council.
Bristol Is Open is developing an open programmable city region that provides citizens with the ability to participate and contribute to the way their city works. The initiative uses dedicated fiber, mesh and wireless networks especially deployed across the city to create an experimental high-speed, high-performance software defined network. The network provides next generation network research and development opportunities to technology companies, enterprises, research organisations and others. The software defined network provides Network Function Virtualization to create a fluid, living, connectivity environment for a wide range of smart city research and development experiments.
Alan Carlton, Vice President of InterDigital Europe said: “Bristol Is Open is an exciting initiative with a vision that aligns perfectly with InterDigital’s 5G and IoT focused research and development efforts. Collaboration on this innovative project serves as another positive example of InterDigital’s strong and open innovation model.”
Paul Wilson, Managing Director of Bristol Is Open added: “With more than four decades of digital innovation InterDigital’s involvement will help to strengthen Bristol Is Open’s insight and ambition. InterDigital are joining other industry leaders to help build the world’s first open programmable city.”

About Bristol Is Open
How cities work is changing. Bristol Is Open, a joint venture between the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council, is a digital research infrastructure to explore developments in software, hardware and telecom networks that enable more interaction between people and places and more machine-to-machine communication. The project uses a high performance software defined network as the city operating system, then internet of things platforms and big data analytics feed an emerging number of smart city applications. This is giving people more ability to interact, work and play with the city that they live in, and will help cities address some of the biggest challenges of modern urban life.
