Mike Chaplin, 1948-2014

11 November 2014

Mike Chaplin, a former Senior Porter in the Computer Centre, died recently. Liz Lynch, Site Services Manager, offers an appreciation.

Mike joined the University in September 1984 as a porter and cleaner. He soon found his feet and by 1989 had been promoted to Senior Porter.

Mike spent many years based at the Computer Centre and became a well-known figure on the front desk. He knew his building and the occupants very well.

Mike had high standards, and this was apparent both in his work as Senior Porter and in his appearance – he was always very well turned out and strived for everything to run like clockwork.

He was also involved with the Trade Unions and spent many years advising and supporting his fellow employees as shop steward for the TGWU (now Unite).

Sadly Mike started to feel the effects of arthritis in his late 50s, and by 2008 this condition had become chronic, so he took ill health retirement in March 2008.

When in good health, Mike enjoyed his holidays in Scotland with Helen, his Scottish wife, and was partial to a good single malt.

Mike passed away on Saturday 8 November and will be missed by all who knew him.
