Senior civil servants speak to Bristol students

Alex Aiken speaking at the event Bhagesh Sachania

11 November 2014

Alex Aiken, Executive Director of Government Communications, visited the University last week to give a lecture to students about the Civil Service.

His visit is the latest in a series of events in which senior civil servants have been giving talks to Bristol students about the Civil Service, the current issues it faces, its future development, and career opportunities, in the context of the service’s campaign to increase recruitment in 2015.

Mr Aiken’s lecture, entitled ‘The Challenges of Building a Modern Civil Service’, covered recent changes and reforms, issues concerning communications and the media, and career pathways in the Civil Service for graduates. The talk was followed by a Q and A session chaired by Professor Judith Squires, Pro-Vice Chancellor.

The concluding lecture in the series will be given by Mark Sedwill, Permanent Secretary in the Home Office, on 2 December, again chaired by Professor Squires.

The final lecture, by Mark Sedwill, takes place in the Social Sciences Complex, Priory Road, on Tuesday 2 December at 6pm. The Q and A will be followed by a networking session, with an opportunity for students and postdocs to talk to ‘fast stream’ representatives about recruitment.
