Press release issued: 26 February 2014

A Bristol team are putting their endurance to the test with a 4321 Challenge which involves four people, three summits, two wheels, and one challenge.

The aim is to run up and down the three highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland as a four-person team on 2 May 2014.

To add a unique spin to this well-known test of stamina they will also cycle the distance in between Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis. This continuous effort will involve 27 miles of mountain running and 450 miles of road cycling in approximately 48 hours.

The 4321 team consists of Matt Edwards from the University of Bristol, Chrissie Wellington MBE, Alex Price and Marcus Mumford, all of whom are based in Bristol.

Between them they have completed Ironman triathlons, overnight ultra-marathons and long distance bike rides, however, the combination of continuous mountain running and cycling is a new and different challenge.

Chrissie, who gave a public lecture at the Wills Memorial Building last December, is a World Champion and World Record Holder for the Ironman Triathlon, and remains undefeated at that distance.

The event is self-organised and inspired by the challenge of raising £10,000 for children’s charity The Rainbow Trust and Jole Rider, which donate bicycles to countries in Africa.

Matt, Sports Development Manager at the University of Bristol’s Centre for Sport, said: “Part of my role is to create excitement and interest in the things that sport, exercise and health can offer people. Being active should never be a 'chore' or something we 'should' do, but instead should be something everyone can do that will be active and fun as well.

“I know this challenge will be far from what some people consider 'fun', and at 4am on the fourth of May I might well be one of those people. Overall though I like the idea of being able to demonstrate that any physical challenge is an achievement in itself, and also a process that engages mind and body.”
