Press release issued: 28 April 2014

With the 2014 European elections due on 22 May, the University of Bristol is searching for material to augment its election archive which includes an extensive collection of European election addresses and other election materials, such as manifestos and flyers.

Since 1979 the University of Bristol Library Special Collections has been collecting material published by all candidates of all parties in UK constituencies, creating a record of the issues and influences which affect the voters’ choice.  The collection is available to any interested researcher.

Special Collections is writing to all candidates from all parties standing throughout the UK, appealing to them to send copies of their European elections materials to add to the archive.

They are also appealing to anyone receiving the material through their front door to save the paper leaflets and send them to Special Collections so that they can be made available to future researchers.

Election addresses, manifestos and related publicity from any constituency and party should be sent to: Special Collections, Arts and Social Sciences Library, University of Bristol, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol, BS8 1TJ; telephone (0117) 928 8014; email special-collections@bristol.ac.uk Please record the town and postcode where the pamphlet was received.

The European Election Address Archive complements Bristol's Westminster Election Address Collection, which is also nationwide in scope and dates from the 1890s to the present, for both general elections and some by-elections.

Special Collections' election webpage shows a summary of their work, which is catalogued in more detail in their online archive catalogue.
