Critical triumph for Bristol composer's new CD

7 June 2013

The latest CD of music by composer and University of Bristol professor John Pickard has been described as 'one of the most important contemporary orchestral CDs of 2013' in a 5-star review in the latest edition of BBC Music Magazine.

The CD features three orchestral pieces – Piano Concerto, Sea-Change and Tenebrae – composed by Professor Pickard over the past twenty-four years and performed by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins.

This disc follows the 2008 release of a recording of three of Professor Pickard's works – Channel Firing, The Flight of Icarus and The Spindle of Necessity – also performed by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and released by major international label BIS records.

An absolute triumph – BBC Music Magazine

Fredrik Ullén brings both sensitivity and virtuosity to a work [Piano Concerto] that can rank with the finest of its genre in the past-half century... OUTSTANDING – International Record Review

This is quite simply a magnificent work with an emotional engagement which is extremely rare in modern music, and it was given a stunning performance by Brabbins and the orchestra – Seen and Heard International
