Get fit to fight cancer

Bristol City Council

17 May 2013

Staff and students who want to improve their fitness and raise money for charity have the chance to run the Bristol Half Marathon for the University Cancer Research Fund.

The University Cancer Research Fund (UCRF) is sponsoring ten places in the 2013 Bristol Half-Marathon, which will take place on 15 September.

You don't need to be an athlete – just someone who is passionate about the cause and willing to raise sponsorship money.  All selected runners will receive one of the UCRF's ten gold bond places in the race, and will get help and advice during their training from the team at the University's Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health.

UCRF has funded the brightest and best cancer research in Bristol for more than 50 years.  ‘The work we support ranges from research on the discovery of new cancer drug targets, to ways of predicting individual susceptibility to cancer, and the most effective drug treatments,’ said Professor Harry Mellor from the School of Biochemistry, and the chair of UCRF. ‘Over the years, we have funded a host of small and exciting projects that have grown to become major research areas.’

Anyone interested in taking up one of the ten places should fill out the application form and return it by the deadline of 28 June.
