Dr Catherine O'Rawe in the Department of Italian, with colleagues at Exeter and Oxford Brookes universities, has been awarded a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council for a study of Italian Cinema audiences in the 1940s and 1950s.

Dr Catherine O'Rawe, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Italian, along with colleagues at Exeter and Oxford Brookes universities, has been awarded a grant of £690,000 from the Arts and Humanities Research Council for a project entitled ‘In Search of Italian Cinema Audiences in the 1940s and 1950s: Gender, Genre and National Identity’.

The project focuses on the gap in knowledge surrounding the Italian cinema-going public of the 1940s and 1950s, for whom cinema was by far the most popular pastime. It will involve conducting interviews with Italians in their 70s and 80s about their memories of cinema-going in this period, as well as a national survey of over one thousand Italians.
