Science and engineering impact accelerates with six more EPSRC awards

20 December 2013

The University’s EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) has made six new awards since October 2013, comprising two Knowledge Transfer Secondments, two Proof of Principle, one Proof of Concept and one Public Engagement award.

Of the 36 awards made to date, one project nearing completion, Autonomous Radiological Monitoring (ARM) Systems’, is working with the National Nuclear Laboratory to offer this technology in Japan for environmental surveying during the ongoing Fukishima clean-up operations.

Knowledge Transfer Secondments

Seven secondments have been awarded in total and most involve both University researchers working in industry and business staff spending time with University research groups. The projects range in duration from 8-12 months.

One recently awarded project develops a relationship with BAE systems Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Facility and the University’s world-leading Centre for Quantum Photonics (CQP) through a two-way secondment involving three University staff and two BAE employees.

‘The projects supported through the University’s Impact Acceleration Account involve a wide range of businesses and public bodies, small and large. The narrative emerging from our IAA shows the fantastic early-stage success that we can build from grant-funded research, ‘ said Andrew Wray, Knowledge Exchange Development Manager.

The University’s IAA is distributed through an internal competition and panel review every eight weeks managed by the Research and Enterprise Development Division (RED).

If you are a science or engineering researcher at Bristol with an idea or project that would benefit from a secondment or other collaboration, please visit our EPSRC IAA webpages or get in touch with Andrew Wray, Frances Frith or Lucy Stephens in RED's Alliance Development Group.
