Bristol Engineering graduate, Joe Smith, has been named New Civil Engineer Graduate of the Year 2013, and another Bristol engineer, Tom Bartley, is a runner-up.

Joe was considered by a panel of 20 industry leaders to be the most inspirational young civil engineer of six finalists in the prestigious competition. Besides prize money, and international recognition, he wins a career-enhancing apprenticeship with the president of the Institute of Civil Engineers.

During Joe’s degree at Bristol, he collaborated on a project on Eurocode 7, followed by a summer placement in Arup Geotechnics. After graduating with a first-class Masters in Engineering, he joined Arup as a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer in London. Joe was presented the award in recognition of his ability to articulate the challenges that civil engineers now face, and his work on a number of high-profile projects, including the preliminary foundation design for the Garden Bridge, London, and the testing supervision for a new BSI Speedway track at the Friends Arena, Stockholm.

Also sharing in the £4,000 prize pot is another Bristol student, Tom Bartley, who also made the final six of 118 international entries, and was named a runner-up. Tom is studying for an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Systems at the EPSRC-funded, industry-sponsored Industrial Doctorate Centre in Systems, exploring ground-breaking uses of Building Information Modelling (BIM), in partnership with EngD sponsor Parsons Brinckerhoff.

The NCE Graduate Awards recognise the most promising all-round civil engineers in their graduation cohort, who are now applying what they have learned in their first postgraduate jobs. Finalists and winners are considered ambassadors for their profession, and its future leaders.
