A research project to drill through over 3 km of Antarctic ice into subglacial Lake Ellsworth has received widespread coverage in national and local newspapers, radio and TV, including The Guardian, BBC News Online, BBC Ten o'clock News, CBBC Newsround, Sky News, ITV News, Channel 4 News, Spiegel Online, The Post and the East Anglian Daily Times.

The team of British scientists and engineers, which is led by Professor Martin Siegert and includes Professor Martyn Tranter of the School of Geographical Sciences, is fulfilling a 16 year ambition to drill down into the lake.  They hope to find signs of life in the water and clues to the Earth’s past climate in the mud at the lake floor.
