16 July 2012

The Universities South West RELAYS (Regional Educational Legacy for Arts and Youth Sport) project has won the BUCS ‘Diversity in Sport’ Award.

The Universities South West RELAYS (Regional Educational Legacy for Arts and Youth Sport) project has won the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) ‘Diversity in Sport’ Award, which recognises a project that increases inclusion and diversity for under-represented groups in sport.

RELAYS, a project involving 11 universities and many student volunteers, has so far delivered 1,241 sporting events and activities, involving over 75,337 young people since 2008 in traditional and non-traditional sports to realise their full potential.

RELAYS is led by the universities of Plymouth, Bristol, Bournemouth, Bath and Gloucestershire and by University College Plymouth St Mark & St John and draws on the expertise and facilities of the region’s universities. To date, 7,300 student volunteers have taken up the opportunity to coach, mentor, teach and reach out to young people from all backgrounds. RELAYS will continue beyond 2012, thanks to the recent award of Legacy Trust UK Transition Funding.
