Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, currently funding almost three quarters of a million pounds of research at the Universities of Bristol, Bath and the West of England. The charity is inviting people to come to the event and find out more about this pioneering research.
Dr Pat Kehoe and Professor Seth Love, co-directors of the Dementia Research Group in the School of Clincial Sciences at the University of Bristol, will give short talks about their research into potential new treatments for Alzheimer’s. This will be followed by Professor Steven Gill, a consultant neurosurgeon, who will be talking about the ways in which surgery could help people with Alzheimer’s.
Dr Pat Kehoe, who is looking at whether blood pressure drugs may hold promise as an Alzheimer’s treatment, said:“We would welcome everyone to come along to this event and find out about the research happening on their doorstep. Huge advances are being made in understanding the diseases that cause dementia and we need to keep this momentum up if we are to find effective new treatments for these devastating diseases. The event will be a great way for people to learn more about dementia and the progress research is making.”
Dr Laura Phipps of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:“There are over 820,000 in the UK living with dementia, with more than 4,000 in Bristol alone, yet research into dementia remains hugely underfunded. We rely solely on donations to fund our work and so this event gives us a great chance to show people the impact our research can have on the lives of people with dementia.”
The free meeting will take place at the BAWA Health and Leisure Club, 589 Southmead Road, Filton, Bristol, BS34 7RG. Talks will run from 7- 9 pm with refreshments at 6.45 pm.
