Crispian Scully CBE, Professor in Oral Medicine, has been elected President of the International Academy of Oral Oncology.

Crispian Scully CBE, Professor in Oral Medicine in the School of Oral and Dental Sciences, has been elected President of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO) at the Singapore Congress.

Professor Scully published a seminal paper in the Lancet in 1983 on the association of herpes virus with lip cancer. He subsequently worked on human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral cancer, and promoted the concept of cancer as a sexually shared infection. The current epidemic of oropharyngeal cancer in young people is now recognised as related to HPV infection rather than the well-recognised risk factors of tobacco and alcohol.

Professor Scully also founded the successful journal Oral Oncology; is advisor to the Oral Cancer Foundation; and has recently published (with Healthcare Learning) a DVD on oral cancer. He has published over 100 original research papers on cancer, and over 25 chapters for books on cancer.
