A panel of representatives from the Trust and the universities has shortlisted seven patient centred projects which are currently being advertised for PhD studentships. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 30 November 2011 and the expectation is that the successful applicants will start their studies in early 2012.
Research Director at UH Bristol, Professor David Wynick, said: “This type of collaboration between an NHS Trust and its academic partners is truly innovative. Our university partners are critical to its success and each project has joint NHS and academic co-supervisors.
“The studentships are open to doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals interested in clinical research."
Andrew Dick, Professor of Ophthalmology and Faculty Research Director for Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Bristol, said: “We were very impressed with the quality of applications, and there was a good balance between medical and non-medical projects.”
Professor Robin Means, Associate Dean (Research, Enterprise, and Public Engagement) at UWE Bristol, said: “We are delighted to be part of this scheme that will enhance clinical research across Bristol.”
The seven projects hosted by each university include:
University of Bristol
- New treatment for resistant hypertension.
- Treatment of heart failure: shared decision making by patients, GPs and cardiologists.
- Viral gastroenteritis in children in hospital: causes, costs and treatment.
- Design of personalised anti-coagulation therapy for patients undergoing surgery.
UWE Bristol
- Nutritional care of children during and following hospital treatment.
- Novel non-drug treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy.
- Physical activity to reduce fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis.
