George Ferguson to help design Students’ Union’s future

Highly-regarded Bristol architect George Ferguson is to return to the University where he learnt his trade, this time in an advisory role to the Students’ Union.

He studied at Bristol University from 1965 till 1971 and has made a significant contribution to architecture and regeneration at a local and national level, recently being awarded a CBE for his achievements.

In his role as trustee of the Students’ Union, Mr Ferguson will advise on how it’s run and the strategic direction of the organisation.

His appointment coincides with the start of a £25million project to refurbish the 1960s Students’ Union building on Queen’s Road, Clifton.

Thangham Debbonaire, a nationally recognised expert in helping victims of domestic violence, has also been appointed as a new trustee alongside George Ferguson.

She has worked with schools and youth projects to give young people violence-free lives and was the Labour party candidate for the Ashley ward in the May 2011 elections.

Samantha Budd, Chief Executive of the Students’ Union, said: “These appointments will really strengthen our board and ensure that the Union continues to develop into a high-quality and effective organisation that adds tangible value to the University and the wider community.”
