Open day attracts 13,000 visitors to Bristol

Press release issued: 20 September 2011

Bristol is to experience a surge in visitor numbers as 13,000 people attend Bristol University’s latest open day tomorrow [21 September].

The event, aimed at future undergraduates, is fully-booked with youngsters and their parents experiencing a taste of university life while seeing what the city has to offer.

Bristol University remains one of the UK’s most popular universities in terms of applications and has a strong international reputation thanks to its leading research.

All of the University’s undergraduate schools and departments are taking part and will be hosting a number of interactive demonstrations and information events.

Prospective medical science students will be able to test their skills on a Human Simulator – a state-of-the-art, life-sized ‘manikin’ that can be programmed to simulate abnormal body function, disease processes, and the effects of drugs.

Visitors can also attend a variety of lectures, from a Neuroscience talk entitled ‘Hearts may pump and muscles may twitch but brains rock’, to finding out about the range of western art and architecture covered in a History of Art degree.

There will also be a chance for students to visit University accommodation at Stoke Bishop as well as an exhibition in the Victoria Rooms to learn more about the student support services on offer.

Around 200 student stewards, wearing red T-shirts, will be on hand to help visitors find their way around the University precinct.

General information talks relating to many aspects of higher education, such as funding your studies, will be available in the Wills Memorial Building along with specific sessions for parents, teachers, careers advisers and mature students.

Lorraine Norman, the University’s Undergraduate Events Officer, said: “Prospective students always find the open day a fantastic opportunity to meet staff and view the University’s facilities to see what opportunities are available at Bristol.

“It’s great to see so many people visiting us and I hope they find the day informative and enjoyable.”

The Open Day coincides with the launch of a new smartphone application which directs visitors around the precinct and provides information about University buildings and facilities.

Please note that this event requires a ticket to attend and all tickets have now been allocated.
