Smart Walking Tour hits the mark

9 September 2011

The University has launched a new smartphone application (currently iPhone only) that directs visitors around the precinct and provides information about University buildings and facilities.

The University of Bristol Walking Tour app has been developed as part of the JISC-funded MyMobileBristol project. This builds on the Mobile Campus Assistant, a mobile-friendly website that can be accessed by anyone with a smartphone, integrates information from around the University precinct and from external websites and provides users with time- and location-sensitive data.

The software for the Walking Tour was developed by IT Services R&D/ILRT, the research and development division of the University’s IT Services, in partnership with the Web Editor team in the Public Relations Office (PRO). The app was the brainchild of the Widening Participation and Undergraduate Recruitment Team, which provided the narration, with additional content by the PRO. There are plans to produce a printed version of the tour for those unable to access the app.

Mike Jones, Senior Web Developer in IT Services, reports that the Walking Tour achieved 160 downloads in the first eight days of becoming available on the Apple iTunes website.
