Press release issued: 4 July 2011

Health experts from across the world will gather in Bristol this week for the 40th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC). The conference, which will runs from Wednesday 6 to Friday 8 July 2011 is hosted this year by the Academic Unit of Primary Health Care at the University of Bristol.

The SAPC Annual Scientific Meeting is the leading academic primary care meeting in the UK, bringing together national and international researchers and health practitioners from a range of disciplinary backgrounds to discuss the latest research and teaching which promote excellence in the development, delivery and evaluation of primary health care policy and practice.

The conference will showcase the latest scientific research in primary care, including research investigating childhood obesity, domestic violence and predictors of serious illness in children.

Keynote speakers include Fiona Godlee, Editor in Chief of the BMJ, Sir Iain Chalmers, founding Director of the UK Cochrane Centre and Professor Gianni Angelini Director of Bristol NIHR Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Medicine, and Dr David Pendleton, Psychologist, writer and teacher.

Professor Chris Salisbury, Head of Academic Unit of Primary Health Care, University of Bristol and Conference Chair, said: “We are looking forward to hosting this prestigious conference in the beautiful city of Bristol. The future of the NHS is increasingly going to be based on primary care, as GPs drive the commissioning of services and more health care is delivered in the community rather than in hospital. This conference will discuss some of the latest findings about diagnosis, effective treatments and ways of delivering health care.”
