A student at the University of Bristol has received the Chinese Government Award for demonstrating outstanding performance in her PhD studies.

Lifei Fan, a PhD biochemistry student has been awarded the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Chinese Students Study Abroad.

Launched in 2003, the award aims to reward the academic excellence of self-financed Chinese students studying overseas. The award is made to 500 Chinese graduate students worldwide each year and covers all fields of academic research.  Lifei is one of only 37 postgraduate students in the UK to have been honoured with this award.

The awards were presented by the Chinese Ambassador, Liu Xiaoming, at a ceremony hosted by the Chinese Embassy held earlier this month.

Harry Mellor, Professor of Biochemistry at the University, said: “I am extremely proud of Lifei, this is a great achievement and well deserved.

“Lifei's PhD studies have been funded through a University Postgraduate Scholarship and an ORS award from the UK government. This award not only reflects the academic excellence at Bristol, but also the high level of support and opportunities in place for overseas students to excel.”
