Press release issued: 22 July 2010

Forthcoming exhibitions for 2010-2011 at The Bristol Gallery will focus on British Art and Modernism, two major research strands in the University of Bristol’s Department of History of Art. The exhibitions – on the Surrealists, David Hockney and Henry Moore – will be curated by gallery staff in conjunction with postgraduate students from the University.

Surrealism at The Bristol Gallery opens with a buyers’ view on Thursday 29 July 2010 from 5pm until 8pm.

The exhibition features limited edition etchings, lithographs and aquatints by Surrealists Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró, alongside contemporary paintings, prints and installations by Simon Vaughan Winter, David Lewis, Dirk Larsen and Kevin O’Keefe.

To accompany the exhibition Tricha Passes (History of Art Department, University of Bristol and Visual Cultures, UWE) will be leading a seminar examining the Surrealist circle in Paris around André Breton, considering the implications of Surrealism during the 1920s and 1930s set against the political tensions of the period.

The seminar takes place on Saturday 7 August 2010, 10am-12pm and is free and open to all.

Surrealism runs at The Bristol Gallery from 31 July to 29 August 2010.

Other forthcoming exhibitions for 2010-2011, in association with Goldmark Gallery, include exhibitions dedicated to original prints by David Hockney and Henry Moore.
